Alys Metcalf

Alys is a Welsh writer (although spent some of her formative years living on a tiny island in The Isles of Scilly). She’s a member of this year’s BBC Cornish Voices group and last year’s BBC Comedy Room. Her interactive story, The Act, was commissioned by BBC Taster and was released earlier this year. Her TV sitcom, The Home, was optioned by production company, Hartswood, and she has developed another sitcom and two shorts with Sharon Horgan’s company, Merman. In terms of radio, Alys has been part of the writer’s room for BBC Radio Wales’s topical comedy show, The Leak. Her short film, Remnants, won the main award for Best Film and Best Writing in the International 100 Hour Film Racing competition. It was screened at The Hackney Empire, as part of the London Short Film Festival.


As a playwright, Alys’s writing includes five-star, sell-out hit, You Only Live Forever at SOHO Theatre, Reel Life at Ustinov Studio Theatre Royal Bath, and Unearthed, which was chosen as one of the Guardian Readers’ Favourite plays of 2015 and enjoyed a successful UK tour, playing the Arcola, Hull Truck and Cheltenham Everyman theatres, amongst others.


Alys is the Co-Artistic Director of Viscera Theatre (In Tents and Purposes, SOHO Theatre + UK Tour), whose Patron is playwright Nick Payne. She trained under the Royal Court Young Writers and Criterion Theatre writing programmes. She is a recipient of two Peggy Ramsay awards.
