THE GREAT WAVE by Francis Turnly to have US premiere at Berkely Rep Theatre
Francis Turnly’s hard-hitting, geopolitical thriller The Great Wave has been chosen by Berkely Rep Theatre for their 2019-2020 season by their new artistic director Johanna Pfaelzer.
Set in Japan and North Korea, The Great Wave first premiered at the National Theatre in March 2018, directed by Indhu Rubasingham in a co-production with the Tricycle Theatre. The play received rave reviews with the Financial Times calling it ‘an urgent, riveting and resonant piece of theatre.’
The Great Wave focuses on the relatively little-known abduction of more than a dozen Japanese citizens by North Korea in the late Seventies. The play examines one family’s grief as their teenage daughter Hanako is presumed drowned during a violent storm, but soon their tragedy takes on a global political dimension.
This is the first time the play will be shown to US audiences.
