Amazon greenlights adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s THE POWER

Amazon Studios has picked up Sister Pictures’ adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel The Power for a 10-part series.

The dystopian thriller, in which women become the dominant gender after developing a ‘power’ that enables them to electrocute people at will, will be helmed by Reed Morano, the Emmy-winning director of The Handmaid’s Tale. Alderman was mentored by Margaret Atwood and the 2016 novel won favourable comparisons with the Canadian author’s classic.

Morano said the story “made me feel things so viscerally that I have honestly never felt,” adding that it was a ”profound and masterful vision of the complex dynamics of our world reversed.”

Soon after the book’s publication in 2016, Sister Pictures announced it had optioned the rights, with Alderman set to adapt it herself.

Sister chief executive Jane Featherstone will executive produce with Alderman, Morano and Naomi de Pear. It will be filmed on locations around the world next year.

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke described The Power as “a timely, provocative series”.
