DHA Open Day for Under-Represented Writers – Scriptwriting for Film/TV/Theatre.
When: Thursday, 19 September 2019
Where: David Higham Associates, Waverley House, 7–12 Noel Street, Soho, London, W1F 8GQ
Last year, David Higham Associates’ Books department organised an Open Day at our offices to open out the way in which we connect with new writers. We offered a group of fiction writers from under-represented backgrounds the opportunity to spend a day with us; meeting experts from the publishing industry and receiving tailored feedback on their work.
Following the event’s success, the Film, TV & Theatre department are extending the same opportunity to scriptwriters. The inaugural Scripts Open Day will take place on Thursday, 19 September 2019 at our offices in Soho and will focus exclusively on scriptwriting for film, TV and stage. The day will feature talks and Q&As with agents and development professionals, a one-to-one session with one of our Film, TV & Theatre agents, and the opportunity to meet and network with like-minded writers. There will be 8 available places and a bursary for travel expenses will be available for each writer chosen.
We are inviting submissions for film, TV and theatre scripts of any genre based on original ideas. We will not at this time be considering radio scripts, adaptations or submissions from writing teams. Scripts (one per application) must be full-length (a minimum of 30 pages long), written by one writer only and cannot currently be in development with a film/TV production company.
We welcome applications from any writer living in the UK from an under-represented background, including LGBTQ+ writers, writers from working-class backgrounds, writers from ethnic, cultural and religious minorities and disabled writers. Writers must be un-agented.
Please could all interested parties submit their applications via the form to the right, filling in all required fields and attaching their script, a one-page pitch doc and a writing CV. Attachments must be in .doc or .pdf format.
Applications are open from Wednesday, 8 May 2019 and close Monday, 10 June 2019.
DHA’s next Open Day by the Books department is scheduled to take place in December 2019 and will focus once again on fiction writing for adults. More information will be available closer to the time.

Feedback from previous participants:
‘Being invited to be part of the open day has really given me a new energy with which to attack my writing. Feeling as though I’m part of a community of writers is wonderful, and I’m wildly grateful to David Higham for making that possible.’
‘The event was really informative and inspiring! I hope you continue to run them in future.’
