Phil Whitaker is a doctor in general practice when not writing.

He won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award for his debut, Eclipse of the Sun. He won the Encore Award with his second novel, Triangulation, and has published four other novels. He also writes a weekly column on medicine for the New Statesman.

Phil is now combining his two main spheres of activity in a new work of non-fiction, What is a Doctor?, which will map his decades of work as a GP on to the recent history and evolution of the NHS.

What is a Doctor? is published by Canongate.
