Nick Hayes is a writer, illustrator and print maker who lives on the Kennet and Avon canal.

His most recent book, The Book of Trespass, was published by Bloomsbury, 2020. It is a non-fiction account of climbing over the walls of the politicians, aristocrats and media magnates that own England, and a call-to-arms for more public access to nature.

In 2021 he illustrated The Heeding, written by Rob Cowen, Elliot and Thompson.

Hayes has published four highly acclaimed graphic novels with Jonathan Cape, including The Rime of the Modern Mariner, Woody Guthrie and the Dust Bowl Ballads, Cormorance and The Drunken Sailor. Each one in separate ways focuses on mankind’s relationship with the environment.

As an illustrator he has produced numerous book covers including that for Lark by Anthony McGowan, which won the Carnegie Medal in 2020. He is also a printmaker and political cartoonist for the Guardian and New Statesman.

He is co-founder of the Right to Roam campaign, which seeks to make nature more accessible for all. Wild Service, A Culture of Care, a series of essays on new ways to make a responsible relationship with landscape, will be published by Bloomsbury in 2024.
