Margaret Powell (1907–84) was the author of a bestselling account of her life working ‘downstairs’, in service. Below Stairs was one of the inspirations for the very successful and long-running television drama Upstairs, Downstairs.
Margaret also wrote a sequel, Climbing the Stairs.
