Amy's Honeymoon by DHA client Julia Llewellyn corrupts Welsh child
A boy, aged 8, takes home book containing sex, drugs and swearing from his primary school library.
Story Date: 16 September 2008
The Daily Telegraph reports that Park Primary School, in Bargoed, south Wales is investigating how an eight-year-old boy was sent home with a book containing swear words, and references to sex and drugs. According to the paper, Year 4 pupil Curtis Gingell found that Amy's Honeymoon contained swearing and showed it to his mother, Belinda Gingell. Mrs Gingell, 28, of Gilfach, Bargoed, was horrified and when she delved further into the book she found references to cannabis, cocaine and Viagra: "An eight-year-old, to come out of school with something like that, I wouldn't give this sort of thing to my 12-year-old."
A spokesman for the school and Caerphilly Local Education Authority allegedly said: "This book was obviously not intended for school children and we would like to apologise to the family for the upset this incident has caused. We will now launch an investigation which will review the school's library stock and the checks that are made to ensure pupils borrow books that are appropriate for their age."
David Higham Associates would like to recommend other DHA clients such as Dylan Thomas and Michael Morpurgo to Master Gingell and hopes his schoolteacher manages to find a replacement copy of Amy's Honeymoon in her local bookshop.
