Dorothy Porter established a reputation as one of Australia's most exciting and innovative writers at an early age. Born in Sydney Dorothy graduated from Sydney University in the same year as her first poetry collection, LITTLE HOODLUM, was published.
Since that time she has published a further five collections of verse, including DRIVING TOO FAST, CRETE and OTHER WORLDS, and four verse novels including AKHENATEN, WHAT A PIECE OF WORK and most recently WILD SURMISE, which was short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award in 2003 and won the Adelaide Festival Award in 2004.
Her first verse novel, THE MONKEY'S MASK, a lesbian detective romance novel, was published in 1994 and has achieved extraordinary success. It won the Age Poetry Book of the Year and the National Book Council's Turnbull Fox Phillips Poetry Prize (the Banjo). In England it received rave reviews and was named one of the books of the year in the Times. It was adapted for the stage as a multimedia onewoman show, and as a radio play for the ABC, and in 2001 a film, based on the book, was released in Australia and around the world.
In 1996 Dorothy was commissioned to write the libretto for a chamber opera, THE GHOST WIFE, with Jonathan Mills as the composer. Based on a short story by Barbara Baynton, the opera premiered at the 1999 Melbourne International, opened the Sydney Festival in 2001, and played at the Barbican in London, in November 2002.
THE ETERNITY MAN, another chamber opera, by Dorothy and Jonathan Mills premiered in London in July 2003. THE ETERNITY MAN, is a phantasmagorical presentation of the life and times of Arthur Stace, and was one of three winners of the inaugural Genesis Foundation award.
Dorothy's books have been published in the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. She is currently working on a new verse novel.
