Farrukh's work as a writer includes stage plays for the Black Theatre Co-operative and novels and short stories for young people. For television, he adapted some of his own short stories for the BBC series COME TO MECCA, one of which, ROMANCE, won the first Samuel Beckett Award. He also wrote the four-part drama serial, KING OF THE GHETTO, for BBC 2 (which was produced by John Amiel and directed by Roy Battersby) and co-devised and co-wrote the innovative comedy series NO PROBLEM and TANDOORI NIGHTS. His first adult novel, BOMBAY DUCK, was published in 1990 and was paperbacked in 1991, and his new novel for young people, BLACK SWAN, was published in 1992. In 1996 Farrukh contributed to ANNIE'S BAR. At the end of 1997 Farrukh left his post as Commissioning Editor for Multicultural Programmes at Channel 4 to return to full time writing.
