Stephen Coote was brought up in Sussex and attended local schools before
going on to study English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He taught for
several years before becoming a full time writer in 1983. He is the author of a
number of academic works, including books on T.S.Eliot’s The Waste Land
and Shakespeare’s Coriolanus for the Penguin Critical Studies series, and
two volumes on English Literature. Latterly, he has written critically
acclaimed biographies of John Keats, W B Yeats, Charles II and
Samuel Pepys. His life of Sir Francis Drake was published in 2003.
