John Kampfner is an author, commentator, broadcaster and journalist who currently works as adviser to Google on freedom of expression and culture. From 2008 to 2012 he was Chief Executive of Index on Censorship, and is also Chair of the Board of Turner Contemporary in Margate, one of the UK's highest-profile art galleries.

John was Editor of the New Statesman from 2005 to 2008, winning the British Society of Magazine Editors' Current Affairs Editor of the Year in 2006. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Statesman's Political Editor, and before that worked for the Financial Times, the BBC's Today programme, and the Daily Telegraph, first in East Berlin where he reported on the fall of the Wall and the unification of Germany, and then in Moscow during the collapse of Soviet Communism.

John’s books include the critically acclaimed Blair's Wars and Freedom for Sale. He is a regular pundit and presenter for all channels on politics and foreign affairs. In 2002 he won the Foreign Press Association award for Film of the Year and Journalist of the Year for his piece The Ugly War, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He is now working on a new book, The Rich: A History, for Little, Brown, and lives with his wife and two daughters in London.
