Jonathan was born in Leicestershire in 1965, the son of a rig-fitter and a primary school teacher. It was while he was at college that he first developed his skills as a writer and illustrator, creating detailed illustrations to accompany poems and lyrics that he had written. After leaving college, he worked as an architect for several years, before pursuing a full-time career in children's books.
In addition to writing young fiction and picture books, Jonathan has also written and paper-engineered a number of pop-up books, most recently Pirate Pussycat and Tyrannosaurus Rocks for Simon & Schuster. Other recent titles include his hugely popular Mole series: Bringing Down the Moon, A Diamond in the Snow, A Secret Worth Sharing (Walker), and The Princess and the Pig (Macmillan).
The Pig's Knickers won the Sheffield Children's Book Award 2011 (voted for by children) as Best Picture book and Overall Winner.
He lives in Nottingham with his wife Rachel, and his children, Max and Laura. His hobbies include walking, reading, furniture design and tinkering with his website.
