Professor Sir Christopher Bayly is a leading scholar in imperial history. Based at the University of Cambridge, he is Director of the Centre of South Asian Studies at that institution, as well as being Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History and a Fellow of St Catharine's College.

Among his books are Imperial Meridian, Empire and Information, Forgotten Armies (with Dr Tim Harper), The Birth of the Modern World (winner of the Wolfson Prize in 2004) and, more recently, Forgotten Wars (Penguin Press, also with Tim Harper). He is now working on The Crisis of the Modern World, for Blackwell.
