John Carey is an author and literary critic, and since his retirement has been emeritus Merton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford.
He has twice chaired the Booker Prize committee and is the author of several books, including What Good Are the Arts?, The Intellectuals and the Masses and, most recently, The Unexpected Professor. He is now working on a book about poetry, for Yale University Press.
He lives in the Cotswolds.
